Airtight seal on natto container required?

If I put the soya/beans in to a container ready for the fermentation process, does its lid need to put on tightly, or not?

Not sure if the natto fermentation process is anaerobic or not, but the few times I made homemade natto i just put a foil on top of the beans to prevent them drying out, I don't think you need an airtight seal on them.

Thanks a lot. I'm sure you are right. I think I read somewhere that it's necessary to have an airtight seal on the container when it's in the fridge - after the main 22/24 hour fermentation period has elapsed.
