Mold on sourdough starter

Postby rafwatson on Sun Aug 10, 2014 2:47 am

I'm making sourdough for the first time. I started the starter 6 days ago. This morning, when I went to feed it, there was a layer of mold on it. I scraped it off and refreshed as usual by transferring it to a clean bowl, adding a cup of flour and some water. Is this ok or do I need to dump it and start over? It seemed fine under the mold and has a fairly yeasty smell. Anyone else have this happen? Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I did have a little mold on the walls of my container when I started my current batch of starter. I moved my starter to a new container and it developed fine. The word "layer" sounds to me like a lot of mold though.

You can always continue and see how it develops. Once you sourdough becomes healthy and strong, it is very unlikely for mold to develop.
