I have a couple of those inkbird thermostats from Amazon but I am not using them ATM ...

Re: Slime in sauerkraut- but not typical dextran circumstanc
I think I would of baked them in the oven for an hour before using them or boiled them for a lot longer than 5 minutes. I don't think 5 minutes is really enough. I would probably spray them with hydrogen peroxide as well to be sure.
I cannot give any help with the safety of the slime.

I did just have to log in again. I do not know how long it has been since I last logged in, it's been around a week or more since I last visited but I think I was logged in then. I do not know whether anything has been changed to affect the logins.

Re: Good sources for yogurt starter?
There should be no problems using a previous batch for successive generations. However beginning from a new starter is a good idea after some time of reuse. Bacteriophages are a potential problem with prolonged repeated use which is why I begin a fresh after around 9-10 generations which I admit is ...

Fermented onion will really stink the place out. lol It will taste okay but while it is fermenting there will be a noticeable smell.
Congratulations on your success AnnieBoo. Have you tried using Red/purple colour Cabbage rather than green? Red/Blue/Black coloured foods have health benefits.

thank you Gutted, those are very good points and I have read the thread that you mention.

Re: My water disappeared
Water in a crock reservoir will tend to evaporate and reduce. However oil in a reservoir will not! If oil is sucked back into the crock it is clearly visible floating on the water inside the crock, which the last time I opened a crock ferment the oil WAS floating on the water and was a total ...

Re: My water disappeared
If bacteria are converting solids to gasses (as they do when giving off CO2), the volume of the gas should be tremendously greater than the volume of the solid. So the over-time pressure differential should always be greater pressure on the inside.

Re: To croc or not?
I would recommend that you look at the disappearing water thread and read that before you consider buying a crock which are expensive. I have been very disappointed in my two crocks and would not purchase another. If you like the idea of the reservoir water being sucked inside the crock with any ...

Re: My water disappeared
Thanks Rich3 for your ideas and explanation.
The pressure outside will change a bit but I doubt it would be enough to cause too much of a problem. Your idea about the pressure inside dropping seems more likely.
That drop in pressure is I think where the big question lies. The volume should ...
