Soft Pickles

I have tried my first batch of pickles and they turned out soft, no crunch at all. I had dill, garlic and a bay leaf in the jar. I also had my pickles cut in small circles, if that makes sense. They also have a strange taste that I can't place, but I am use to "normal" store pickles.
