Mother question...

Postby Rawlinda Sue on Sun Apr 19, 2009 7:51 am

I am attempting my first batch of Kombucha, trying to grow my own mother. I followed the directions exactly - it is a little chilly upstairs, but I have a seedling heating pad under the jar. I started it on April 11th, and I don't see anything forming yet. I do however see what looks like "bubbles" covering the top of the liquid. Am I just being impatient? How/when will I know if things are progressing as they should - what do I do next?

If you are starting your mother from a bottle of raw store bought kombucha you're on the right path.

The bubbles are usually a good sign that the yeast is starting to work its magic.

You should notice a jelly like later starting to form soon as well. This is the SCOBY starting to form.

GL with your endevor.

If you're in the Portland OR area, I'd be happy to give you a mother and some starter to get your first batch going.
